A colon or rectal cancer diagnosis can bring urgent questions about surgery, treatment and recovery. Dr. Astha Bhatt provides personalised surgical evaluations and second opinions for patients throughout Broward County and South Florida.
Every treatment plan is based on the location and stage of the cancer, pathology and imaging results, previous treatment, overall health and individual priorities. Surgery may be performed using robotic, laparoscopic or open techniques when medically appropriate.

A colorectal cancer surgical consultation begins with a careful review of your diagnosis. Dr. Bhatt evaluates your colonoscopy, biopsy, pathology, imaging and previous treatment recommendations before discussing whether surgery may be appropriate.
The evaluation also helps determine whether additional testing or consultation with medical or radiation oncology may be needed.

The right colorectal cancer treatment depends on whether the tumour began in the colon or rectum, its stage, its biological characteristics and the patient’s general health.
Surgery is commonly used for localised colon cancer and many rectal cancers. Chemotherapy, radiation, targeted treatment or immunotherapy may also be recommended as part of the overall care plan.

Colon cancer surgery commonly removes the section of the colon containing the tumour along with nearby tissue and lymph nodes. The healthy portions of the bowel may then be reconnected.

Rectal cancer treatment can differ from colon cancer treatment because of the rectum’s location within the pelvis. Some patients may receive chemotherapy, radiation or both before an operation.

Robotic and laparoscopic surgery use small incisions and specialised instruments to perform selected colorectal procedures. They may be considered when they offer a safe and appropriate approach for the individual patient.

What This Video Explains
This short educational video helps patients understand diverticulitis symptoms, recurrent flare-ups, and when to see a colorectal surgeon for diverticulitis in South Florida.
Colon cancer begins in the colon, while rectal cancer begins in the rectum. Although both affect the large intestine, their treatment pathways may differ. Rectal cancer is more likely to require detailed pelvic imaging and treatment with chemotherapy or radiation before surgery.
No. Surgery is commonly used for localised colon cancer and many rectal cancers, but treatment depends on the cancer’s stage, location, biomarkers and the patient’s overall health. Some patients may receive chemotherapy, radiation or another treatment before surgery.
Options may include local excision, partial colectomy, low anterior resection, total mesorectal excision or abdominoperineal resection. The appropriate procedure depends on where the tumour is located and how far it has spread.
Robotic surgery may be appropriate for selected patients. Dr. Bhatt will consider the tumour’s location, cancer stage, previous surgery, anatomy and overall health before recommending a robotic, laparoscopic or open approach.
Many patients do not need a permanent ostomy. An ostomy may be temporary to allow a bowel connection to heal or permanent when the bowel cannot be safely reconnected. The likelihood should be discussed before surgery whenever possible.
Bring your colonoscopy report, biopsy and pathology results, imaging reports and discs, blood-test results, medication list, insurance information and details of any previous cancer treatment or abdominal operations.
Yes. A second opinion may help clarify the diagnosis, recommended operation, alternative approaches, ostomy risk and recovery expectations before you make a treatment decision.
Recovery varies according to the procedure, surgical approach, overall health and whether complications occur. Your surgeon will provide instructions about eating, walking, incision care, lifting, driving, work and follow-up appointments.
The need for additional treatment depends on the final pathology, cancer stage, lymph-node findings, tumour characteristics and previous treatment. A medical oncologist may recommend chemotherapy, while radiation is more commonly used in rectal cancer care.
Yes. Dr. Bhatt welcomes colorectal cancer patients from throughout Broward County and South Florida for surgical evaluations, treatment planning and second opinions.
